You walk through a bustling Upper Egyptian souq, past spice stalls and textile merchants, and then the ground drops away. Nine metres below street level, the temple of Khnum sits in its excavated pit, the zodiac ceiling glowing overhead in restored colour.
The Temple of Khnum is one of Egypt's strangest archaeological encounters — a Ptolemaic-Roman hypostyle hall sunk nine metres beneath the modern town. The rest of the temple still lies buried under Esna's streets. Conservation finished in the 2020s stripped centuries of soot to reveal a forest of painted columns in cobalt, burnished red and sun-yellow. Around the pit the town has been revitalised in step, its Ottoman-era souq running as one continuous market street from the temple gates to the Nile.
