The Monastery of St. Anthony is the oldest inhabited monastery on Earth, founded in the fourth century at the cave where St. Anthony of Egypt — the father of Christian monasticism — spent his final decades. The complex clings to a cliff face in the Eastern Desert, its thick walls enclosing churches, a library of rare Coptic manuscripts, and gardens irrigated by a natural spring. The Church of St. Anthony contains some of the finest Coptic wall paintings in existence, restored in the early 2000s to reveal thirteenth-century artwork of startling colour and detail. The monastery sits roughly 150 kilometres south of Suez, reached by a desert road that underscores just how deliberately its founders sought isolation.
