The world's highest mountain wall — 4,600 metres of vertical rock rising in a single sweep.

The wall hits you before you understand the scale. From the meadows above Tarishing village in Pakistan's Astore district, the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat rises 4,600 metres in a single unbroken sweep of rock, ice, and shadow — the tallest mountain wall on Earth. The air thins as you approach, but the view only thickens.

Nanga Parbat's Rupal Face is the southern aspect of the world's ninth-highest mountain, and by vertical relief from base to summit, no other mountain wall on the planet matches it. The approach trek from Tarishing village takes two days through alpine meadows that bloom with wildflowers in July and August. Hermann Buhl made the first solo summit of Nanga Parbat in 1953 via a different route, but the Rupal Face remained unconquered until 1970, when the Messner brothers' ascent ended in tragedy and triumph. Above the base camp, the Mazeno Ridge extends for 13 kilometres — one of the longest ridgelines in high-altitude mountaineering. Simple guesthouses in Tarishing and Rupal hamlet are run by families who have guided expeditions for generations.

Best For

Solo

This is a pilgrimage for the self-reliant. The two-day approach trek rewards those comfortable with solitude, altitude, and the slow revelation of a wall that gets more impossible with every step closer.

Friends

A group trek to Rupal base camp splits the logistics and multiplies the awe. Sharing a camp beneath the tallest mountain wall on Earth creates the kind of memory that bonds permanently.

Why This Place
  • The Rupal Face drops 4,600 metres in a single sweep — the greatest single mountain wall on Earth by vertical relief.
  • The base camp at Shaigiri is a day's walk from Tarshing village, sitting directly below the face at 3,500 metres.
  • Herrmann Buhl's first ascent in 1953 — solo, without supplemental oxygen, on the Rakhiot side — is still considered one of mountaineering's most audacious solo acts.
  • The face catches the last light of day for 20 minutes after the valley below falls into shadow — an unmissable daily spectacle.
What to Eat

Camp cooking only — porters prepare dal and rice over gas stoves at base camp.

Fresh milk from Tarishing village on the approach trek.

Pack high-calorie trail food from Islamabad — the mountain demands fuel.
