The rock spires appear first — a row of cathedral-pointed pinnacles jabbing 6,106 metres into pale sky, so sharp they look carved rather than eroded. Below them, a rope-and-plank suspension bridge swings above the glacial river, each plank spaced just far enough apart to make your next step a decision.
Passu sits on the Karakoram Highway in Pakistan's upper Hunza, directly beneath the Passu Cathedral — a formation of granite spires that ranks among the most photographed landscapes in the Karakoram. The village is home to two suspension bridges made of steel cables and weathered planks, both swaying over the milky meltwater of the Passu Glacier. Unlike many Karakoram destinations, Passu is accessible by road — the highway runs through the village — making its dramatic scenery reachable without days of trekking. Stone-walled homes with apricot-wood fires serve yak butter tea and diram fitti, buckwheat pancakes with crushed walnut and honey. The Passu Glacier itself is retreating visibly, its snout shifting year by year, giving the landscape an eerie impermanence.
Solo
The highway access makes Passu a natural stopover for solo travellers heading north to Khunjerab. The bridge crossings and glacier walks are doable alone, and the village guesthouses are welcoming even for a single night.
